How to keep your Children independent in Boarding School

keeping children independent

Your child does not need to spend the first weeks at the school in a drag trying to detach from you in order to fit into boarding school.  A boarding school will give the child the real taste of independence as Children often do not want to be too dependent and act older than their age.

This level of independence will help the kid to develop a mature attitude at a young age, rather than taking advantage of it. These tips will help them stay independent.

Here are some tips on things you can do to make your child independent and enjoy staying in school.

1. Get them all they need

From snacks to beverages to toiletries and clothing to pocket money, the provision of everything your child needs in school will give a sense of independence as well as comfort while in school. Avoid adding new items or food your child is not familiar with to their luggage as school is not the best place for your child to try a new meal.

2. Communication is key

Keeping in touch is as important as ever especially if your child is still trying to get used to being away from the parents. Calling or visiting your child more often at the beginning of the session to make sure he or she is settling in well will definitely make them settle in nicely. Engage your child in a good conversation and get him or her to tell you every of their concerns. This way, they won’t miss you that bad because they have most of the answers they need.

3.Get your child a caretaker

You should get the assistance of a helper or a caretaker, somebody your child will be very comfortable with. Even though most boarding schools provide matrons and patrons for each child, as well as encourage school fathers and mothers. While there have been several sad stories about this tradition, you can personally sort for a reliable caretaker for your child.

4. Encourage interaction with Space mate

Sharing a living space at boarding school with strangers help children to develop their social skills. Introducing themselves to others and interacting with unknown faces helps them to come out of their comfort zone. This builds the confidence in the child helping him/her to deal with real-life issues.

5. Encourage participation in sports/extra-curricular activities

Parent should encourage the inherent talents of children and help them develop it by encouraging them to be part of sporting and extra-curricular activities as this helps to build the overall personality of the child.
